My Approach to Counselling and Psychotherapy, in Lincoln.
My approach is psychoanalytic. This means that problems in the here and now are also seen within the context of your whole life; the history of your relationships and experiences, including your very earliest ones, and the meaning these hold for you.
Psychotherapy or counselling seeks to help you understand what lies behind the difficulties you are experiencing, in the belief that this is the way to find a lasting solution.
This approach is informed by my trainings, by 30 years, post-qualifying, experience and, increasingly, by an interest in affective neuroscience. To me, therapy is about finding a safe relationship in which to think, feel, reflect, explore, make connections, understand, and change.
I see individual clients, at least once a week, and sometimes more often, either, for an open-ended period of time, or for an agreed number of sessions. This will depend on a variety of factors, including the type of problem someone wants to work on, and the type of solution they are seeking. Sessions are fifty minutes long, and take place on the same days, and at the same times, each week.
I am a UKCP and UPCA registered clinical supervisor. I have supervised training psychotherapists (group and individual), as well as qualified professionals, over many years. My approach is to facilitate reflective practice, in a relationship of trust, encouraging the use of parallel process, in supervision, to further understanding. Apart from supervising other practitioners, in private practice, I have facilitated reflective practice groups within the NHS, and for staff at a number of charities, including Hestia, and the Richmond Fellowship. I have also been a clinical supervisor for a South London Counselling Service.
I am a member of the Guild of Psychotherapists, the Universities Psychotherapy and Counselling Association, the Neuropsychoanalysis Association, the College of Psycoanalysts, BACP, and UKCP.
